　　英文詩包括格律詩、無韻詩和自由體詩。

　　在英文格律詩中，輕音和重音是按一定規律出現的。常見有七種：一輕一重叫抑揚格；一重一輕叫揚抑格；一重兩輕叫揚抑抑格；兩輕一重叫抑抑揚格；一重兩個音節叫揚揚格；一輕兩個音節叫抑抑格；含一輕一重一輕三個音節叫抑揚抑格。我們可以根據一個詩行中重音出現的規律和音步的數目說出它的格律，即所謂的格律分析或音步劃分。

　　韻律——

　　詩歌不一定押韻，但一定有節奏（韻律）。節奏在英文中叫rhythm，源自希臘，意為流動（flow）,即從一點向另一點有張有弛地運動。我們如何用音步法來分析英文詩的節奏呢？就拿格律詩為例吧。首先把每個詩行分成若干個音節，并區分哪些是重讀音節，哪些是非重讀音節，找出它們排列的形式，以及這種排列形式在一個詩行中出現次數，也就是行內所含的音步數目。答案補充押韻——

　　所謂押韻，是指相同或相似的重讀音節先后出現在兩個或更多詩行的相應位置上。英文詩押韻的種類可分為全韻、近似韻（也稱有缺陷的韻）。全韻是指押韻時必須押在由不同輔音開頭的重讀音節上，其中元音相同，跟在這個元音后面的輔音或其他非重讀音節也必須相同；近似韻有三種情況，即最后的輔音相同，但前面的元音相似而不相同；元音相同后面的輔音不同，謂諧元韻；重讀元音不同所有的輔音都相同，謂諧輔韻

　　另一個跟押韻有關的詩法手段是詞首韻，是指相同的音素（主要是輔音）重復出現在一些有關聯的單詞詞首部位。

　　英語詩的韻律較為復雜，根據押韻的音在詩行中的出現位置可以分為尾韻和行內韻兩種。尾韻押在詩行最后一個重讀音節上，是最常見的押韻部位，這和漢語詩的押韻相同；行內韻是指詩行中間的停頓或休止前的'重讀音節與該行的最后一個重讀音節押韻。

　　答案補充按照押韻的音節多少，又可分為：

　　單韻，又稱男韻。所押的韻音局限于詩行中重讀的末尾音節，這種韻體強勁有力。

　　雙韻，又稱女韻。押韻于連接的兩個音節上，后一個為非重讀音節，這種韻體常給人以輕快、幽婉之感。

　　三重韻，押韻于三個連接的音節上，多用于幽默詩、諷刺詩中。

　　英文無韻詩是指不押韻但有固定的韻律和長度。

　　英文自由體詩的主要特征是不遵循傳統的音韻格律，詩行長度不規則，它的節奏單位不是音步，而是更大的詞群、短句甚至段落。

　　另外，英語詩歌中經常使用一些只有在詩歌中才用的詞匯，例如thine（your）。
